                                                                           FAQ

Are these concrete countertops?
No, Shirestone® countertops have the look and feel of natural stone or slate and provide an extremely durable surface.  Shirestone® is a crushed stone, natural aggregate that mixes with catalyst instead of water.  The product expands as it cures instead of shrinking, like concrete. Once custom-colored Shirestone® is sealed it does not need to be re-sealed like concrete.  Since the custom blended counter top mix is poured less than one half inch thick, the tops are slightly lighter than concrete or granite countertops.

Are the tops hard to maintain?
No, Shirestone® countertops are seamless, non-porous and resistant to stain.  Any non-abrasive cleaner can be used to keep the tops clean. The tops are sealed during installation and rarely require additional sealing.

Will heat damage the tops?
Shirestone® countertops are extremely heat resistant, food safe and ideal for kitchen countertops in both residential and commercial applications.

Can the countertops go over an existing surface?
Yes, Shirestone® countertops can be placed on existing surfaces (such as Formica or tile) making them ideal for remodeling projects.

Can I cut on these tops?
Shirestone® countertops are extremely durable, but like any surface it's always advisable to use a cutting board.

Are the countertops fabricated and delivered?

Shirestone® countertops are poured on-site and fitted to your counter. The top is seamless, poured-in-place with a continuous pour. Since the installation in done on-site, there are no transport limitations (such as with a granite countertop which cannot be physically delivered to a location).

Are the countertops compatible with all types of sinks?
Shirestone® countertops can accommodate both top-mount and under the counter sinks.

How long does it take to install a countertop?

Shirestone® countertops are usually complete within a five day period. There is no lengthy curing time. Items can be safely placed on the countertop within 24-48 hours after the top is sealed (depending on the type of finish).

What colors are available?
Each Shirestone® countertop is a custom project. The color selection is based on customer preference. With the stone textured appearance of the tops, the more muted earth tones are the most popular choice. The finished look is also affected by the preference for either a flat or high-gloss appearance - different sealers are used to provide the desired finish.

Can back splashes be installed with the countertop?
Yes, Shirestone® back splash forms are used to create decorative back splash pieces to accentuate your countertop.

Can I personalize my countertop?

Unlike other solid surfaces, personalized features can be incorporated into your Shirestone® top - accents such as a memento, decorative tile, medallion, crest, logo, etc., can be in-laid into the countertop surface before it is sealed.

Can I install these countertops myself?

Only certified Shirestone® installers/ dealers are authorized to use our products to create these custom countertops.
